King Erlian
The Last BattleKing Erlian is Tirian’s father, encountered again in the final gathering beyond the stable. His return in the vigor of Tirian’s earliest memories turns the meeting into more than a reunion with a lost king: it restores a childhood bond and gives Tirian a living connection to the Narnian past gathered around him.
Identity and Family
King Erlian is identified as Tirian’s own father and as a good king. Tirian had last seen him pale and wounded after his fight with a giant; Erlian later lived as a grey-headed warrior. The figure who now embraces his son is neither of those remembered versions, but Erlian young and merry, as Tirian could recall him from his very early childhood.
Reunion with Tirian
Erlian throws his arms around Tirian, kisses his cheeks, and addresses him with affectionate familiarity, remarking on how much he has grown since they last touched. The physical embrace confirms the relationship before Tirian can take in its meaning. His father is not merely present among the gathered heroes: he recognizes and welcomes him as his son.
Childhood Memory and the Final Gathering
The sight of young Erlian brings back Tirian’s memories of playing with him in the castle garden at Cair Paravel on summer evenings just before bedtime. Even the smell of the bread and milk Tirian had for supper returns to him. The precise domestic details make the reunion intimate, set against the extraordinary company assembling beyond the stable.
Jewel also remembers Erlian from an earlier part of his own life: when he was a colt, the king gave him many bright apples. Jewel intends to greet him, though another arrival briefly draws his attention. Together, these memories show Erlian as a figure whose kindness and affection belong not only to Tirian’s childhood but to the wider history of those gathered there. His restored youth and reunion with his son make the final welcome personal as well as public.
